Aortic dissection
Normal arterial walls are separated into the intimal, medial, and adventitial layers. Aortic dissection refers to a penetration of the intimal layer of the aorta, resulting in the formation of a false lumen in the medial layer of the blood vessel.
Nevertheless, in 8-15% of cases, there will be no sign of endometrial tear. Often, these cases are caused by intramural hemorrhage, which results in the formation of an intermural hematoma, or blood tumor. These cases differ from an aneurysm because they represent enlargement of the vessel wall as opposed to dilation.
Aortic dissection is a medical emergency with clinical manifestations typically including lacerating pain. Out of all forms of dissection, this is considered the most common as well as the most dangerous because of the large size of the aorta and its chances of rupture. Previous literature reports a one-week mortality rate of 50% and a one-month mortality rate of 60-70%. Even if the patient survives the dissection, the resulting decreased blood flow to downstream organs often result in ensuing ischemia and tissue death.
