Bypass surgery is the circumventing of a disease portion of an artery with either an artificial or biological conduit. The purpose is to restore blood flow to downstream regions. Within the arterial system, this procedure is used to treat disease such as arterial embolism or aneurysms. Additionally, bypass surgery can form an artificial arteriovenous fistula, which can be used in the hemodialysis process of chronic kidney disease by providing an access site that can be repeatedly punctured.
